Creating Magic With Roxy Marrone

House of Roxy founder, Roxy Marrone is working to turn her passion project into the quintessential health and wellness lifestyle brand. Producing a range of goods, including bath products and jewelry focused on manifestation and spiritual healing. The brand is now taking its next step with the development of organic super food powders and a super chic pop up tea & juice bar to demonstrate the powder’s many applications and uses through July.

The Extravagant recently caught up with Roxy to discuss her upcoming product launches and the brand’s new pop up shop. The Tea and Juice bar launched by House of Roxy earlier this spring is located within The Organic Pharmacy’s Marylebone Flagship Store near Regent’s Park in London. The Organic Pharmacy, a staple in London’s health & wellness scene, was founded by Roxy’s parents, Francesco and Margo Marrone, in 2002. Currently, Roxy splits her time between managing events for The Organic Pharmacy and running House of Roxy.

In addition to making some of the best Matcha in London, the tea & juice bar offers customers a variety of House of Roxy products including candles, crystals, body oils, and dog treats. However, the most impressive offering is Roxy’s own super food powders which she mixes into a variety of drinks. According to Roxy the product “increases the production of collagen in your body” and can be mixed with a variety of foods and drinks, stating “you can put them in your porridge” and adding, you can mix them with “really anything hot or even a smoothie.” House of Roxy produces four powders in the United Kingdom, including the Cosmic Collagen Booster (a blend of acai, camu camu, acerola, maqui and goji berries), the Magic Matcha Latte (a blend of green phytonutrients and ceremonial grade matcha), Shroom Mood Latte (an adaptogenic latte filled with ashwagandha, mushrooms, antioxidant rich cacao, and sweet flavors of cinnamon and vanilla), and lastly Glow Seeds (crafted from an adaptogenic concoction of linseed, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower seeds, and tumeric). Roxy boasts that the Glow Seeds “will increase brain function, elasticity [in] skin and leave you glowing from within.” As of right now Roxy manages the production and packaging of the powders in-house as well as the production of her brand’s incense.

In addition to tea and juice, the bar features house made granola, energy balls, yogurt balls, and a couple other treats featuring Roxy’s super food powders.  And a unique perk of visiting the House of Roxy Tea & Juice Bar is the convenient access to the adjacent spa treatments at The Organic Pharmacy. A recent installation at the pop up was a dog focused event with a pet cookbook author and a doga class (doggie yoga).

Speaking on her products mission, Roxy states “[The Organic Pharmacy and House of Roxy’s] brand values and goals are really with benefiting people in a way that is healthy and sustainable,” adding “both my products and Organic Pharmacy products are all made to benefit the user in some way shape or form. So, my ideology is that I’m bringing magic into your everyday routine.” House of Roxy Super Food Powders are now available online and in-store at the brand’s Tea & Juice bar. 2020 Gift Guide – New Fragrances for Men

Colognes have long been a popular gift each holiday season for men. While classics like Bleu de Channel, Acqua di Gio, and Polo Green never go out of style, a new fragrance is a unique gift that allows your loved one to make a statement this coming year. Despite the chaotic and unexpected year that has been 2020, the world of fragrance has luckily not slowed down. Here are some of our favorite new-to-the-scene additions for 2020 colognes for men.

Jo Malone – Midnight Musk and Amber

Jo Malone’s Midnight Musk and Amber is a unisex fragrance that is perfect for the winter months. The top note is juniper, middle note is amber, and bottom note is midnight musk. The cologne is subtle, leaving just a trace of the warm scent on the wearer. Juniper berries are a popular holiday decoration, making Midnight Musk and Amber a perfect choice this holiday season. The berries give the cologne the freshness and aromatic qualities on the top, while the amber rounds the fragrance out with some woodiness. Finally, the midnight musk is a blend of “three musk molecules” that round out the scent as a whole. Although it is new to the Jo Malone collection, the fragrance is already gaining popularity as a daily-wear.

Louis Vuitton Météore Fragrances

Louis Vuitton – Météore

It was only in 2018 when iconic luxury house Louis Vuitton launched its first fragrance for men collection. Quickly becoming a massive success, LV has since expanded its range for men from the original five. This year they launched Météore (read as meteor in English), a scent LV describes as a “sizzle of spicy mandarin.” The name Météore implies power, light, and heat which LV captures with the fragrance notes. The top notes are three citrus fruits: Madarin oranges, Sicilian Oranges, and Calabrian bergamot, which gives Météore a more complex citrus note than if it were simply one of the three. The middle notes are spicier scents, including pink pepper, black pepper, sichuan pepper, neroli from Tunisia, and cardamom. Finally, the base layer is vetiver from Java. While this is more of a citrusy spring or summer fragrance, it still has been a success this year and a bright scent might be welcome this coming winter.

Parfums de Marly Pegasus Exclusif

Founded in 2009, Parfums de Marly gives a contemporary spin on the classic tradition of French fragrance. Pegasus Exclusif is described as “unfettered masculinity’–an update on Parfum de Marly’s 2012 fragrance, Pegasus. The addictive woody scent was used as the launch pad for this new fragrance and the perfumers kept the bitter almond and vanilla notes, while adding woody notes from sandal, oud, and guaiac to form the base. For the middle notes, florals, such as geranium, jasmine, and lavendar were added and finally elegant touches of bergamot, pink pepper, cardamom and heliotrope form the top notes. Definitely a unique scent, Pegasus Exclusif will make a special gift this winter season.

Maison Francis Kurkdijian Paris – L'Homme À la rose

Maison Francis Kurkdijian Paris – L’Homme À la rose

Perhaps the most niche fragrance on this list, L’Homme À la rose comes from Maison Francis Kurkdijian Paris, the house of Francis Kurkdijian the legendary perfumer who created iconic scents such as Le Male for Jean Paul Gaultier and My Burberry for Burberry. L’Homme À la rose takes a traditionally more feminine scent, rose, and gives it a bright yet masculine twist. The first top notes are grapefruit and Damask rose. The scent is rounded out with a deep French sage and a dark, woody amber. A unique twist on a classic rose scent, L’Homme À la rose makes a unique gift for the man in your life who likes to stand apart from the crowd.

Dior Homme – Eau de Toilette

Classics are classics for a reason and Dior Homme Eau de Toilette is no exception. Dior Homme Eau de Toilette was first launched in 2005 and has been a world-wide favorite ever since. This year, Dior re-invented and re-launched the fragrance, reinventing the scent and the bottle. Including quintessentially masculine fragrance notes, Dior Homme Eau de Toilette’s base notes are Amber and Cedar; middle note is Tuscan Iris; and the top notes are grapefruit, bergamot, and coriander, which add a refreshingly bright top layer to the darker base layers.

Le Labo – Baie 19

Also of note this year is Baie 19 from Le Labo, a New York City perfume brand. To learn more about Baie 19, please follow the link.

The Most Luxurious Spa in Monaco | Meet Spa Metropole by Givenchy

Situated within the world renowned Hotel Metropole Monte Carlo, is the Didier Gomez designed Spa Metropole by Givenchy which is the closest one can come to a true Haute Couture Spa. Having just re-opened this month after a period of closure due to the global pandemic, we took an opportunity to explore the Principality of Monaco’s finest spa.

One of the first and most significant aspects of Spa Metropole’s design language is the use of elegant black and white marble coupled with soft furniture that gives the space a clean, yet soft and relaxing atmosphere void of sharp lines and aggressive design elements found in many modern facilities. Our favorite design que? A wall of virtually projected plants which transport one into a serene rain forest state of mind.

With ten treatment rooms varying both in size and shape, Spa metropole offers luxurious facilities fit for individuals and couples, alike. Options include a double suite and single suite equipped with a private bath and hammam. The walls of the facilities’ treatment rooms are anything but ordinary, featuring embossed paneling reminiscent of a white Givenchy lace gown. An elegant finishing touch to the design work are the candle like light fixtures.

A list of over two dozen unique and fascinating treatment options leave little to be desired. Massage options, which last between 60 and 90 minutes, include muscle coaching, energy boost, anti gravity, and divine harmony. One of the most unique options, the Anti Gravity treatment focuses on stimulating blood circulation and detoxing, and is said to leave guests “walking on air.” Other treatment highlights include the “Givenchy Man”, a skin treatment for gentlemen combined with a massage, as well as the L’Intemporel, an anti aging treatment to leave your skin looking more youthful. Though our personal favorite is the “Heat Experience” package, which includes sauna, hammam, caldarium, ice fountain, and sensory shower treatments.

A more uncommon offering at the Spa Metropole is the ability to select a Givenchy fragrance to accompany you throughout your treatment. To accomplish this, a fragranced tissue is placed in your bathrobe or on your treatment table.

A section of the spa has been dedicated to a Givenchy boutique, which showcases the Maison’s finest collection of skincare, fragrance and makeup products, including the exclusive L’Atelier de Givenchy fragrance consisting of 11 unique scents that made their debut in Monaco. For the woman who seeks only the finest beauticians, Spa Metropole offers “The Givenchy Makeover” with options ranging from express make up services to makeup lessons.

With its unique environment, exceptional collection of formulas and world class treatments, the Spa Metropole by Givenchy offers an unforgettable experience of the highest caliber.

The Spa Metropole by Givenchy is open daily from 8.30 am to 7.30 pm. Treatments are available by appointment between 10am and 7pm. For those who seek to combine their spa treatment with an overnight stay, the Hotel Metropole Monte Carlo is currently offering a “Happy Days!” promotion until September 30th, 2020. The offer, which is available starting from 480 Euros per night, includes accommodation in a superior room, American breakfast, and two complimentary cocktails at the ODYSSEY pool area designed by Karl Lagerfeld.

Capturing The Smell of Rain: Le Labo Releases Baie 19

Inspired by petrichor–the smell after it rains–Le Labo Fragrances has released a new scent called “Baie 19.” Based in New York City, Le Labo was founded in 2006 and later acquired by Estée Lauder Companies in 2014. Since its foundation, Le Labo has become synonymous with hand-crafted, made to order luxury scents for men and women. Le Labo’s naming scheme has two parts: the word refers to the primary scent note, and the number refers to the number of compounds in the scent. For the case of Baie 19, the main scent note is berry (juniper berry) and contains 19 compounds.

As Le Labo states on their website, petrichor is, “one of the most beautiful olfactive phenomena in nature.” To capture this magical scent and the intense feelings that come with the sensation, Le Labo has mixed dry juniper berry, green leaves, patchouli, and musk. The scent creates a musky and woody scent with amber and aromatic notes. Baie 19 retails online for 158 EUR/50 ML.

“Flower Gems of India” by Bvlgari Joins Forces with 100 Family-owned Farms in India

Bvlgari perfume division has announced their newest partnership, a collaboration dubbed “Flower Gems of India.” The program, which has been praised for its efforts to support 100 family-owned Indian Jasmine farms, will feature perfumes designed by Firmenich and Jasmine Concrete, a specialist in the production of floral extracts for perfumes. The three-year long program will focus on flowers produced in India’s Tamil Nadu state.

The Italian house, which was founded in Rome nearly 150 years ago, has long maintained a passion for sourcing the best of materials. The “Flower Gems of India” is a demonstration of Bvlgari’s undying resolve for creating remarkable products that bridge the gap between luxury and sustainable, ethical and responsible production.

“It became important to us that we contribute to support the communities that enable us to create our masterpiece fragrances, and that we establish a sustainable approach to preserve and support the local economy. Like our jewels, our fragrances are crafted from nature’s finest gems and we are passionate about finding, sourcing, and wherever possible, supporting the production of these extraordinary ingredients,” says Jean-Christophe Babin, Chief Executive Officer of Bvlgari.

Sound, scientifically based farming techniques are at the heart of Bvlgari’s approach to Jasmine production. Methods will focus on advising small farms on how they can improve soil quality and better manage their water supply to ensure improved quality flowers and ultimately higher levels of profits to improve the farmer’s and their family’s own quality of life.

Most importantly of all, Bvlgari’s “Flower Gems of India” will help promote and keep alive the act of traditional Indian flower cultivation and improve the livelihood of Indian Farmers.

Les Sables Roses by Louis Vuitton | Celebrating the Beauty of the Middle East

Les Sables Roses is Louis Vuitton’s latest addition to their line of exceptional fragrances. The perfume’s name which translates to ‘the pink sands’ was developed to pay homage to Middle Eastern scents.

Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud drew on thousand of years of Middle Eastern history to develop a scent that is thoroughly unique, yet pays homage to the region’s beauty and perfume making saga.

With respect to the desert’s majestic nature, Louis Vuitton has stated that the scent of Les Sables Roses is meant to awaken “the spellbinding moment in time at daybreak when the first rays of sunlight bathe the landscape in a shade of rose that blends dunes and sky. Between night and day, shadow and light, cold and heat, this instant reconciles contrasts.”

With notes of rose, oud, and ambergris, this perfume is genuinely reminiscent of both Arab and Persian fragrance making. This extraordinary contrast was accomplished through the use of outstanding earthly substances, namley, Ambergis, one of the rarest substances on the planet, which is employed to enhance the composition of the rose’s freshness and the oud’s woody aroma.

A time honored Middle Eastern tradition is the concept of layering different fragrances, in this respect Les Sables Roses does not disappoint. One unique opportunity is combining this scent with Louis Vuitton’s Ombre Nomade fragrance. All said, the finished product goes beyond the sum of the perfume’s ingredients and also the talent of Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, to create a fragrance that is truly awe inspiring and quite essentially magical.

Revision Rhinoplasty: What You Should Know

Let’s talk revision rhinoplasty – in case you don’t know what this is, it’s basically a medical term that says “fixing a messed up nose job.” With nose jobs being in such high demand, sure enough, some bad ones are bound to happen. For those requesting revision rhinoplasty, or doctors prescribing it to their patients, they are seeking to help:

Sometimes, revision rhinoplasty is done for far more serious issues, as you’ll find later on in this article.

Why People Get Revision Rhinoplasty

All nasal issues – both functional and cosmetic – are best addressed during the initial nose job. However, going for a secondary or follow up surgery becomes inevitable, sometimes.

There may be an unanticipated healing problem. The issue may be due to an incomplete surgical procedure that was not handled properly during the first surgery or the reason may be beyond this information.

As said by Dr. Marcelo Ghersi, a Miami rhinoplasty specialist, many choose a revision nose job because of the less-than-satisfactory results from the first one. Most surgeons who fix these botched nose jobs have all the knowledge, experience and skills needed to treat complex revisions and can address a wide range of patient concerns. The patient’s previous records and photos, medical and operative, may be helpful to focus on the issue at hand.

What Revision Rhinoplasty Addresses

Some of the most common issues addressed during a revision or secondary rhinoplasty include, but not limited to:

Around 10 to 15 percent of patients who have undergone initial rhinoplasty may require nasal reshaping surgeries at a later date. A person who had this procedure previously might desire the surgery again because they have had difficulty breathing, or the healing process may have not gone smoothly as expected. The initial surgery may have resulted in an anatomical complication or the patient is simply dissatisfied with the results.

What Does Revision Rhinoplasty Do?

The primary purpose of a nose job revision is to correct one or more of the above issues as previously mentioned. The sooner someone with these issues receives the right direction and treatment, the more effective it can be. However, it is important to remember that the tip of the nose is a combination of soft tissue and cartilage, which will require enough time to heal and change in shape.

Sometimes, it may take several months or even years to see the end results. Today’s technology and techniques used by surgeons can minimize errors to a considerable level and bring in the desired result without complications. The equipment and methods used can lower the chances of side effects or symptoms recurring. Once the issues are addressed appropriately and in a timely manner, the patient can benefit more fully from aftercare.

For some people, secondary or revision rhinoplasty seems miraculous, reducing the issues or permanently eliminating them. This procedure usually has had a major impact on improving their symptoms: overall functioning of the nose and self-confidence. Your treating surgeon will determine what type of surgery is right for your situation, whether you are better off with the closed approach of rhinoplasty or open approach.

In a closed rhinoplasty, minor contour corrections are made. Open rhinoplasty is used where major structural changes are required. Sometimes, cartilage grafts may be needed to accomplish the intended results. The surgeon will help with the right choice in all cases and issues. They may explain why one approach or technique is more suitable for your situation than another. The patient’s individual physiology, level of functioning of the nose, its appearance and how long the issues have been there without treatment or correction, may all be related to what type of rhinoplasty is administered and how much he or she will benefit from it.

Side Effects

Revision rhinoplasty can be effective in treating a wide range of side effects because of improper primary surgery or imbalances. This procedure, as mentioned before, can also prevent recurrence of symptoms or issues in most cases. It can be highly effective for people who have been otherwise depressed or facing mood disorders due to a nose job. When people with such disorders or low self-esteem find the right treatment for their nose, their symptoms will usually disappear or reduce greatly, allowing them to live a productive and enjoyable life.

Most patients with an initial faulty operation can gain considerable relief and cure when they undergo revision rhinoplasty. More and more effective treatment and procedures are being developed in this field all the time. And much research and technology are underway for new and more effective techniques.

Over the Moon with Makenzie Moon Phelan

Makenzie Moon Phelan in the Studio, all images courtesy of the artist, 2019.

The Extravagant discusses art, culture and makeup with Makenzie Moon Phelan, NYC based artist and socialite, and daughter of wickedly fun art world patrons Amy and John Phelan. Drawing from a wide range of cultural references, we dive into her work as a makeup artist and her contemporary art practice:

What drew you to the world of make-up?  What do you feel is the role of the make-up artist and how does your fine art background (i.e. painting) inform your practice?

“Since I was young, I have been interested in both fine art and make-up for cinema or fashion.  Before parties and events, my mom and her friends would have me apply their make-up just at the age of seven, and I realized this is something I really enjoyed creatively. Creating and being around Contemporary Art heavily influences my make-up practice.  From thinking about how palettes and materials work together, to the physical application of pigment is so painterly.”

What inspires you, where do you draw inspiration from?  We noticed Stephen Hawking on your Insta, who inspires you?

“In my opinion, everyone’s view of the world is very different up to the point where my blue could be your green. I think how different people view our world is what has shaped and shifted basic human knowledge and understanding. Whether it be philosophers, artists, scientist, or famous mathematicians; had they not shared their personal world [inside of their head] with the public, our universe would lack so much color and expansiveness.”

“I am really inspired by the artists Will Cotton, Marilyn Minter, Marc Dennis, and Richard Phillips due to their fine craft. Currently I’m hooked on this brilliant Italian artist Paola Pivi. I think the mind and methods behind her works are beautiful.”

“I am also really inspired by trends in decades. I love the 60’s, especially Edie Sedgwick, and I also am fascinated with 18th Century aesthetic. Adding contemporary palettes to an old time period is really fun for me.”

Ornamentation on an anthropological level exists throughout human history, what is the role of make-up in society in your opinion?

“Makeup is a form of self expression. It also allows people the ability to enhance their natural beauty by using different color palettes, glitter, symbols and light diffusion.”

What is your dream commission as a make-up artist?  Is it cinema, is it runway, etc;

“I feel like my work is multi-faceted, so I would be thrilled to work in film or runway, but my dream project would be any form of collaboration or work with Ve Neill [of Beetlejuice and Hunger Game fame] one day. She is an extremely powerful woman in the makeup industry who’s work has influenced me since I was a little kid.”

What trends do you love in make-up and obversely what do you dislike?  Favourite brands? Favourite makeup artists?

“My favorite trend in makeup is a basic cat eye with a red lip. I usually never leave my house without a cat eye. It’s a classic yet sexy look. I’m also really into the 60’s makeup trends. I think the big brows, dark sculpted eyes and dramatic lashes is a very feminine and playful look. I also love drag makeup. I’ve learned some of the best techniques through the drag community when I was living in London.”

“I’m not a huge fan of the heavy contour look, or any kind of makeup that covers freckles. I think makeup should always enhance one’s natural and inner beauty.”

“My favorite makeup artist in the beauty industry of all time is Charlotte Tilbury, that is a person I would also love to work with. In the special effects realm my favorite artist is Ve Neill. Pertaining to music, it is hard for me to pin down a favorite band, but my favorite musician is Marilyn Manson. I think he is brilliant, and a walking piece of art. There’s so much more to him than what lays on the surface.”

What is the relationship between art and fashion?

“Both art and fashion are an extension of an individual’s creativity.  Creating or collecting art is an expression of self, just as fashion is.”

When did you become interested in art?

“From a very young age I have been creating art!  I grew up in a household that not only welcomed creativity, but championed it.  I have always been surrounded by incredible works of contemporary art, and I feel very fortunate that in most cases I know or am friends with the artist that has made them.”

Tell us about your own work as an artist? What projects have you taken part of? What’s your favourite media to work in (other than cosmetics)

“I love working with oil on canvas, and have had private instruction by some incredible artists such as Marc Dennis and Will Cotton. When I was younger, the problems I faced growing up (my personal inner turmoil) created a lot of noise in my head, I started writing poetry at a very young age as an outlet, then began illustrating the emotions behind my poetry and it evolved from there.”

The Freedom Within, Makenzie Moon Phelan, Oil on Canvas.

How do you navigate between a cultural patron, an artist, and a muse?

“I don’t see these as being separate parts of my personality.  I think they all relate to each other, and I am just thrilled I can be part of a creative community in all of these capacities. People inspire me on a daily basis, and I feel happy I can inspire others as well.”

Skull, Makenzie Moon Phelan, oil on canvas.

How does growing up in a family of art collectors impact your own aesthetic preferences?

“Growing up around some of the best examples of contemporary art is an incredible education.  Not only do I get to learn about new artists, but I am able to study the depth behind the individual behind the work, and learn about the material process of an artist. It also really helped me embrace my individuality as a person, leaving me unafraid to push boundaries with the way I dressed, or wore my makeup. Growing up around art the way I did also inspired me to let go of any fear of being experimental.”

Without any limitations tell us five artists or works of art you’d love to see in your dream collection.

  1. One [of] Paola Pivi’s colorful feathered (life size) Polar bears and a piece from her “Zebras” series
  2. One of Marilyn Manson’s water color pieces
  3. Anything by Marc Rothko
  4. One of Will Cotton’s Cake Sculptures
  5. A Donald Judd “Stacks”

Are you affiliated with any institutions, foundations, or organizations?

“I just moved back to New York City, and am exploring new opportunities. As of right now I am affiliated [with] my family’s foundation. The Phelan Family Foundation believes that all people deserve the opportunity to succeed. To accomplish its mission, the Foundation funds a broad range of causes including education, the arts, health care, military personnel, and vulnerable populations. The Foundation seeks to address community needs at all levels—be it access to clean water, safe shelter and nutritious food, or education and training that unleashes the potential for economic prosperity. It also seeks to effect lasting change and measurable outcomes, while maintaining the Phelans’ sense of compassion and gratitude to the world.”

Having lived in many different places: where is home, literally and philosophically?

“I am currently based in New York, which is where I grew up. New York City is home for me.  I’ve spent time living in London and Los Angeles, but I recently moved back to NYC after finishing a program in special effects makeup on the West coast.  I also spend a lot of time in Palm Beach, FL and Aspen, CO with my family.”

What are some of your favourite places to visit in the world, what shouldn’t we miss?  What are some of your favourite art world or cultural events?

“Every summer I look forward to attending the ArtCrush events for the Aspen Art Museum, an event hosted by my amazing Mother, Amy Phelan. My favorite places I’ve traveled to though are Dubai, Chiang Mai, Jaipur, and Kyoto.”
